As the new Florida Federation for Youth Development Director, I have many people to thank for the successful day we all shared on September 23, 2017. The event was made possible by donations of both time by volunteers, and goodie bags provided by USA Water Ski and Henrik Laursen of Miami Ski Nautique. Henrik included tee shirts and new ski gloves, which were a huge hit with the skiers!
Our hosts Jack and Lelani Travers, were more than generous by offering up their facility and their staff to support us in every way possible. Gordon West and Dennis Longo also used the facility to run a drivers’ clinic at the same time, and Bill Wenner and Jeff Clark hosted Judge and Scorer clinics, which made it a home run for everyone.
My daughter Nicole and my niece Brenda arrived bright and early to check everyone in, as well as prepare and serve a delicious hot lunch.
The 17 junior skiers who participated (many first timers at a clinic) expressed how much they were enjoying themselves throughout the day. Some of the highlights included Scot Ellis taking Connor Walsh over the jump ramp safely for the very first time. Several skiers learned new tricks coached by Anna Gay and Kevin Jack, and Brooke Baldwin’s pointers on slalom had a number of her group skiing their personal best.
Off the water it was easy to see that new friendships were being developed, which in itself is priceless. The event was a huge success!
There will be another Junior Development Clinic in the spring of 2018. Although a firm date has not been picked, Sunset Lakes has already committed to hosting again. Since we will be capping this event at 30 skiers, call or email to secure your spot on the list.
